Job Description

Job Title: Mainframe Computer Technician 2
Location: Nashville, TN

Job Summary:
We are seeking a technically skilled and experienced Mainframe Computer Technician 2 to lead operational support efforts and provide advanced troubleshooting within a mainframe computing environment. Under immediate supervision, this position is responsible for identifying, documenting, and resolving mainframe operational issues and providing leadership to subordinate technical staff. The role involves both hands-on technical work and coordination of issue resolution across hardware, software, and user support dimensions.

Distinguishing Features:
This is the lead-level class in the Mainframe Computer Technician job series. Employees in this role lead teams in problem diagnosis and resolution, train technical staff, and act as liaisons with hardware vendors and programming teams. It differs from Mainframe Computer Technician 1 , which performs working-level tasks without lead responsibilities, and from managerial classifications, which involve formal supervision over broader IT operations teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the identification, documentation, and analysis of mainframe operation errors; determine root causes, including equipment malfunctions, user mistakes, or programming errors

  • Enter corrective commands and assist operators in resolving system and terminal issues

  • Work with hardware vendors to resolve equipment failures; document and follow up on service actions to ensure proper resolution

  • Provide technical guidance to remote terminal operators on system startup, operations, and error correction

  • Assist in planning and installation of new computer hardware, including cabling, power requirements, and physical layout

  • Operate and monitor mainframe components, including tape drives, disk drives, printers, and consoles for error diagnostics

  • Use diagnostic tools such as oscilloscopes, monitors, and patch panels to troubleshoot teleprocessing issues

  • Assist with job scheduling and space/resource allocation to optimize system efficiency

  • Support recovery operations in the event of system failure or data loss; assist programmers with system recovery and testing

  • Maintain and update program libraries, monitor outputs, and report system anomalies

  • Train new and existing technical staff on operations procedures and error resolution techniques

  • Prepare and maintain technical reports on system operations, equipment issues, and performance statistics

Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:

  • Associate's degree from an accredited college or technical institute in one of the following or related areas:

    • Computer Operations, Electronics, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Communications Technology, Systems Analysis, Business Data Systems, or related fields

  • AND three (3) years of full-time experience in at least one of the following areas:

    1. Identifying/documenting/analyzing operational problems on mainframe systems

    2. Manual operation and monitoring of mainframe or midrange systems and peripherals

    3. Installation/maintenance of computing hardware and peripherals (e.g., terminals, modems, printers)

    4. Training, assigning, or evaluating technical staff in a computing environment

    5. Providing technical support for desktop or mini-computer environments

  • At least one year of the experience must involve mainframe error identification and resolution

Substitution Options:

  • Up to two years of qualifying full-time experience may substitute for the Associate's degree requirement on a year-for-year basis

  • One year of college (45 quarter hours) with at least 12 quarter hours in a qualifying IT or electronics field is equivalent to one year of experience

Special Requirements:

  • A valid driver's license may be required depending on assignment

  • Must be able to work rotating or fixed shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed
